Read For Kids

Last Updated: 10 October 2026

Effective date: 10 October 2026

Read For Kids (the “App” or “Service”) is operated by SapiensTales Pte. Ltd. (UEN 202529495W), a company registered in Singapore (“we”, “us”, “our”).

1.1 Data we collect and how we use it

We collect data that is necessary to provide the service, manage quotas, prevent abuse, and comply with law. This may include:

  • Device identifier (device_id): Used to bind your device to your usage, manage book-creation quota, and prevent abuse (e.g. multiple devices claiming free tier).
  • Registration information: If you sign in with Apple or Google, or register with email or phone, we receive the identifying information you provide (e.g. email) for account management and to contact you when needed.
  • Usage data: Number of books you have created, OCR and translation and AI request counts per book, and similar metrics. We use this for quota enforcement, abuse prevention, and service improvement. We do not store the images you scan or the text of your books on our servers (local-first design). Scanned images and page text are only sent for temporary processing as described in 1.5.

Purposes: Providing the Read For Kids service, managing free and paid quotas, preventing abuse and fraud, improving the product, and meeting legal obligations. We do not use your personal data for marketing unrelated to the service, and we do not sell your personal data to third parties.

1.2 Your right to delete account and data

You have the right to request deletion of your account and personal data. In the app, go to Settings → Account & data → Delete my account / data. The flow will ask for confirmation, explain what will be removed and what (if any) minimal information we may retain, and link to this Privacy Policy.

What we delete: When you delete your account, we remove your account information, usage records, and any other server-side records linked to your account (such as book counts and AI usage counts). On your device, the app will also clear local books, settings, and related data as part of the same flow.

Abuse-prevention retention (“one-time free tier”): To prevent abuse of the free tier (e.g. repeatedly deleting and re-registering to get free books again), we may retain only minimal, de-identified information: a one-way cryptographic hash of your device identifier or, if you registered, of your email or phone number. This hash cannot be reversed to identify you. We use it solely to check whether that identifier has already used the free tier. We do not retain your usage history, book list, or any other data that can identify you. If you use the same device or same email/phone again, you will not receive the free tier again. Where the law requires a legal basis, we rely on legitimate interest (prevention of abuse).

1.3 Data retention and security

We keep personal data only as long as needed for operations and legal requirements. After your deletion request is completed, we remove your data from our systems within a reasonable period. De-identified hashes used for abuse prevention (if any) may be kept indefinitely; the legal basis is legitimate interest (abuse prevention), and we do not use them to identify you.

We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your data. No system is completely secure. If we become aware of a breach affecting your personal data, we will act in accordance with applicable law (including any required notifications).

1.4 Children’s privacy

Accounts are for parents and legal guardians aged 18 or over. Children may use the App only with a parent or guardian, who sets up and manages the account. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

In “kids mode” we do not track children’s behavior or collect analytics about children. Access to in-app purchases, external links, and sensitive settings is protected by a parental gate (e.g. PIN or parent verification).

We design the Service to comply with applicable children’s privacy laws, including the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) in the United States, the GDPR/UK GDPR where applicable, and Singapore’s Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA). If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, contact us (see Contact) and we will delete it.

1.5 Use of third-party AI and voice services (OpenAI, Google)

When you use features such as "read this page" (text extraction from a photo) or "Q&A" (interactive questions about the page), we send the scanned page image and/or the page text to OpenAI through our own backend. This is used only to provide (a) text extraction and optional translation, and (b) generation of age-appropriate reading questions. We do not use this data for advertising, and we do not sell it to third parties. Data is transmitted over secure channels; OpenAI processes it according to their Privacy Policy and Terms of Use. We do not use OpenAI's API to train their models on your content (per our configuration and OpenAI's API terms). If you do not want your scanned pages or page text sent to OpenAI, do not use the "read this page" or "Q&A" features.

Read-aloud voices (Google): When the App reads a page aloud using cloud voices, we send the page text (not the image, and not your account details) to Google’s cloud text-to-speech service through our own backend, only to generate the audio. Google processes it under the Google Cloud Privacy Notice. If cloud voices are unavailable or over quota, the App uses your device’s built-in text-to-speech, which works on your device.

1.6 Cross-border and other third parties

We may use servers or other third-party services (e.g. hosting, crash reporting, and app analytics) located outside your country. App analytics are not collected in kids mode (see 1.4). Where we do, we use appropriate safeguards (e.g. contracts and technical measures). For questions about where your data is processed, see Contact.

1.7 Your rights

You have the right to request deletion of your account and data as described above (in-app: Settings → Account & data → Delete my account / data). Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have additional rights (e.g. access, correction, withdrawal of consent, or complaint to a supervisory authority such as Singapore’s Personal Data Protection Commission). For those requests, contact our Data Protection Officer as set out in Contact.
